Two types of anesthesia is used in varicose veins surgery.

1) Regional anesthesia
2) General anesthesia

Spinal and epidural anesthesia are regional pain blocking techniques. In spinal anesthesia small amounts of anesthetic is delivered into Cerebro Spinal Fluid with a specially designed thin needle. Pain is totally blocked for two hours at levels below navel.

In Epidural anesthesia, anesthetic medication is delivered into the epidural space with a very thin catheter placed right outside Dura, the thin membrane that covers spinal chord. This technique is employed when we need pain blockade for longer than two hours.

General anesthesia is usually preferred.

Contemporary General Anesthesia is extremely safe, swift and has comfortable post operative period. Computerized monitoring and drug delivery together with safer and more effective anesthetic drugs (with much reduced or no side effects introduced after 1990), made GA the first choice in outpatient surgery.

It is advisable :
A light shower before leaving home.
Using glasses instead of contacts.
A comfortable sports outwear
Fasting for 6 hours
Having a friend or a relative to accompany you to home

DO NOT FORGET: You MUST have an empty stomach, even drinking water is not permitted outside stated period.
